Profiles of New Residents

From the Kendal Times, the resident published newsletter.

Ann Atwood brings to Kendal years of the magic of numbers.  As a 5th grade teacher (for 36 years) and Math Coordinator (for two years), at the Ray School, she taught lots of students the many ways that make math fun.  In her early days, from 2nd grade through high school, she and a group of friends enjooyed the experience of the Girl Scouts.  Ann was raised in Claremont, NH and went to Keene Teacher's College before coming to Hanover.  From 1967-68 she attended the University of Connecticut, where she earned her Master's Degree.  There, she was awarded an Experienced Teacher Fellowship in Mathematics for her work with underachievers in grades 4 through 9.  She spends her summers at her cottage on Rocky Bound Pond in Croyden, NH.  Her family has a pontoon boat that they like to take out in the evening to be in touch with the loons and the fish.  One of her interests is knitting Irish sweaters.  She is also active in Our Savior Lutheran Church, where she was treasurer for many years.  She looks forward to her new world and meeting many new friends at Kendal.

One gets the impression that new residents, Margaret & Thomas Richard (Dick) Powell, did not arrive at Kendal to take up a life of leisure.  Dick arrived for this interview with a pot of pansies for Margaret, which he had purchased during his bike ride.  This let to a discussion of gardening, which they will be doing here at kendal and in Pomfret, VT, at the home they built in 1983.  1983 was also the year Dick got his pilot's licence and began ferrying Margaret around the country and to a Fly-in Florida community where they spent their time off and on for five years.  Before ascending into the sky, they sailed their boat as far south as Florida and as far north as Northeast Harbor, ME.  However, do not let these activities mislead you - Dick and Margaret are hard workers.  They both grew up in the Philadelphia are and were married in 1954.  After graduating from Wesleyan U. in Middletown, CT, Dick served three years as a First Lieutenant in the Korean War.  He then entered the life insurance field.  Employed by CT General Life, Manufacturers Life, he later formed his own corporation.  Margaret, a graduate of Hollins College in VA, has actively participated in many causes: land preservation, the Pennsylvania Program for Women Offenders, successfully lobbying for change in the stat's correctional system, appointment to the Governor's Justice Commission, president of the Board of Managers of a juvenile correctional institution, writing a book two years ago about her experiences during the aftermath of the bombing of the US Embassy in Beirut.  Not to be left out of this history are their two sons and five grandchildren!  Their final comment was that they are happy to be residing at Kendal with "no boat or airplane, but a lot of new friends."
